Tools

1. Tools were mainly crafted from the surrounding environment. Whale bones and other animal parts as well as materials from the sea were used. For example, the stomachs of sea lions were used as inflatables to float whales back to shore after hunts, and weaponry could be fashioned from the left over body parts of the animal.

Geographic locaion

2. People lived along 2,000 miles of coastline from southern Alaska to northern California. The plateau reigion wasto the east beyndthe Cascade mountain range, and California people lived in the south. More than 500 peoplein tribes such as the Chinook, Haida, Nootka, and the Tlingit lived in the region before 1800. There were plenty of food and cedar to make to build their homesand make their canoes.

Shelter

3. The coastal Indians did not kive in tepees.  Instead, they lived in longhouses built of thick cedar planks. These houses were also called plank houses. These early people chopped and split massive cedar trees using beaver teeth and stone axes. Thelonghouses were huge. Some were about 100 feet long and 25 feet wide, with low roofs for easy heating. The only opening in the whole building were the entrance door and a hole in the roof to allow the smoke to escape.

Social customsa and religious practices

4. A Todem Pole is an aristic way hat some Pacific Northwest Coastal tribes use to tell a story.  Yoy might think because of their love for carving and their artistic ability, and because they loved tall tales, that the indians wholived in the Pudet Sound area of Washingnton State in olden times might have created the first todem pole. They didnt. This is a form of art that was brought to them via trade from tribes along the Pacific coast to the north from the south. They loved the idea., and quick adoped it to their own.

Native American fesivals and holidays are richly diverseas their culture. Festivals can reveal a great deal about their culture. A most interesting cultral festival, celebrated by most Northwest tribes, was a potlach.
